Apple and Google in Talks with Japan's Rapidus for Mass Chip Production by 2027

Japanese semiconductor startup Rapidus is currently in negotiations with tech giants Apple and Google to begin mass production of advanced chips by 2027. This strategic move aims to establish Rapidus as a major competitor in the global semiconductor industry as the demand for cutting-edge chip technology continues to soar.

Rapidus has been expanding its operations to meet these ambitious production goals. In April 2024, the company launched Rapidus Design Solutions in Silicon Valley to foster collaboration with major American IT firms. The initiative also aims to attract top engineering talent to develop semiconductors tailored to specific client requirements.

The Japanese government has shown robust support for Rapidus’s efforts. In late 2024, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced a $65 billion initiative to boost Japan's semiconductor and AI sectors, a significant portion of which is designated for Rapidus. Additionally, Japan is planning to invest approximately $1.3 billion in Rapidus during the fiscal year starting April 2025 to help the company meet its goal of launching commercial chip production by 2027.

Rapidus is also forming critical partnerships to enhance its technological edge. In early 2024, the company signed a contract with Canadian AI chipmaker Tenstorrent, marking its first major customer. This collaboration is centered on the development of RISC-V-based architectures, aligning with national efforts to advance Japan’s semiconductor innovation.

With government backing, international partnerships, and discussions underway with Apple and Google, Rapidus is positioning itself to play a central role in the next era of global chip manufacturing.
